The Trinity

Opening Prayer

Lord, as we are gathered here, as your disciples we ask you that the blessing of the Father, Spirit and Son. The Holy Trinity, Three in One, Be in our meeting and our greeting, In the worship we now share and the words of our prayers. We ask that your love, Grace and knowledge flow in our hearts and stir our minds. Guiding us in your will, your glory and your council, ever leading us to your joy and peace. Amen

Offering prayer. We thank you lord as we gather as your church. Each one of us, a part of your body. Each one of us with gifts to serve you for your glory. Help us Lord to discern what our gifts are and how we can offer them for service to you. Guide us with the offerings we provide, wether it be money or our time, to help glorify your name and share your love to those around us, in this room and out those doors. Amen

From Christmas, till now is a pretty busy season. Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, Good Friday, Easter, Ascension, Pentecost. We have spoken about and discussed, in bread and wine, in flesh and blood and last week Wind and fire as the spirit came to be available to us. No mean feet as before this the spirit was only given to select people. And now the church calendar causes us to celebrate the Trinity Sunday. It can be seen as another draining sermon. Both for the speaker and the listener. Another sermon with information overload and more questions than answers. The trinity.

Well today I’m not going to attempt a thesis to explain it or deconstruct the historical contexts of the Trinity and how it came to be.

However, I will add that the trinity doctrine has been around since the 4th century and a part of the Christian faith with records indicating it was practices in the 2nd century. The trinity is not for me or you to explain and decipher. It is for us to believe and trust in. Paul reminds us in his letter to the Philippians, God surpasses all understanding and goes on to highlight to us that in accepting this, there is a peace in that accepting of our inferior mind to that of Gods.

And in that acceptance we find the ability to stop, meditate, muse and celebrate the work and greatness of our God.

Theologian Fred Sanders in a lecture on the doctrine of God. began his talk with this timeless adage: “The Trinity. Try to understand it and you’ll lose your mind; try to deny it and you’ll lose your soul. Such is the importance of our faith and trust in the trinity, you can’t blame people for this reason, of trying to decipher it and understand Gods ways.

Why can’t we just trust, it is so. Is it our pride? Is it our sin? I wonder why Thomas didn’t trust the words of his close friends that Jesus rose from the dead and appeared to them. What is so hard about trust…

I read a C S Lewis description of the Trinity that I could easily appreciate and rather than talking about apples and water or trying to come up with my own clever adaption of one thing having three different forms. I want to share lewis’s view. C S Lewis simply describes the Trinity as a “dance” saying, “God is not a static thing…but a dynamic, pulsating activity, a life, almost…a kind of dance” (Mere Christianity, p 136).

It’s quiet a picture, the three persons dancing as one, in unison, alive and moving, interacting with a common goal working together for each other for the glory the dance. The trinity is a core doctrine of our faith But i want to keep it simple. And in all my reading and googling the best way i can relate the importance of the Trinity to my faith is that each person of the Trinity allows me to see and appreciate my God. It opens up the ability to communicate with my God and have a relationship with him as I, a human can value and participate in.

Just as each person of the Trinity unites to form the God head, the trinity unites me to God. It enters me into a relationship with him. A relationship of love. A dance where I am led by God. A dance which is a quality worthy of joyous praise and pure beauty, when I submit and allow God to lead me.

John Wesley writes If this world was made by a triune God, relationships of love are what life is really all about. A paper written by a 12th century German theologian Meister Eckhart, explained the core of the Trinity as the Father laughs and gives birth to the Son. The Son laughs back at the Father and gives birth to the Spirit. The whole Trinity laughs and gives birth to us. (1260-1327)

Today. This trinity Sunday, i want us to stop our minds. To stop our bodies. Take a breath and as you breath out, allow the weight you are carrying, the worries that only you know and the fears you have, to leave you. It will more than likely take more than one breath. As the enemy doesn’t want your mind to stop for second. Especially in the life changing, loving company of God. It wants to keep you distracted. It wants you to think of anything other than our God and your relationship with him. As you breath, Picture yourself, in the company of our triune God. The way in which he has chosen to show himself to you.

God as a Father, God as Jesus and God as the Holt spirit. If you find it hard, think of the smile of a loved one, happy to see you and be in your company. As a boy, hoping off the school bus, i used to run home from school to see my dads smile. Think of the touch of a loved one, a hug from a certain person that just makes everything feel okay. How special is the feeling of an impromptu hug, from you child or I’m told Grandchild accompanied by the words I love you! And think of the joyous and or valuable wisdom shared to you by someone who loves you, who just knows the right counselling words to say to you. wether they are now in Gods kingdom or at home.

Know that this is the active and alive God existing in your life working for you in triune ways. As a Father, as Christ and as the spirit. I use the ability of your memories to make it easy for you, to not just see God working in your life, but so you can easily relate and give thanks to our triune God. As you’re thinking notice and stay in the peace that our lord promises us, offers us and provides us every day if we choose to receive it. See Gods character in your loved ones, both past and present. Their love, Gods love alive in you today and tomorrow. Even when we are no longer here in this room.

Our stories, our smiles, our church will live on. Just like Christ lives on. Think of Christ your Saviour as he smiles and takes your burdens and worries from you and dances with you joyfully and weightlessly across the dance floor. Trusting his lead. Following him. The joy and beauty created seen by others as the glory of God. I plead with you now, Take the step of faith! As you sit there, simply rejoice in the Trinity.

That is all I want us to do today. Use today to Celebrate Gods wisdom and the character, he has as seen through the father, the son and the Holy spirit. Philippians 4:7 NIV And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Know and believe with out doubt, we have a God who says to us, I choose you! A God as we believe to be, three in one.

The theologian, N T Wright says, The doctrine of the Trinity is, if you like, a signpost pointing ahead into the dark, saying: ‘Trust me; follow me; my love will keep you safe.’ Or, perhaps better, the doctrine of the Trinity is a signpost pointing into a light which gets brighter and brighter until we are dazzled and blinded, but which says: ‘Come, and I will make you children of light.’

The Father. He chose me. He created me. Has a plan for me. Wants me to obey him trust him.

The Son. He saved me. Redeemed me. Died for me. Lived for me to know me. To guide me made the word for me. Wants me to follow him.

The Spirit he counsel’s me. Lives in me. Speaks to me. Strengthens me. Allows me to grow bearing the fruits of the Spirit, connected to the Son as we are His branches. Planted by the Father to provide us his peace, hope and love.

The Father begot (caused, bring about) the Son. The Son, Begot, the Holy spirit. The order is not a descending one. Or one of Rank and structure.. It is just the way God chose to reveal himself to us, to enable to interact with us and enter our lives. To save us and give us his grace. The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit,

Philippians 4:7 NIV

And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Know and believe with out doubt, we have a God who says to us, I choose you! A God as we believe to be, three in one.

The Father. He chose me. He created me. Has a plan for me. Wants me to obey him, trust him

The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, allows for the open lines of communication directly with God.

Christ Words, John 14:6 I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

Philippians 4:9 NIV, Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.

The trinity as one, interact and communicate as one. There is no anger or feelings of frustrations between them. In fact I believe that between them is love. Gods Love

What is between you and God. How do you interact, How do you Interact and communicate with God outside these walls? Ask yourself honestly.

Lack of communication is one of the major problems in relationships and our emotions often get in the way of genuine interaction. Causing distance, Feelings of, anger, fear, disappointment and hopelessness and frustration.

Do any of those strike a personal cord. We have all felt these things, we are human. But what do we do about it.

Find a place to stop and breathe. Meditate on the joy of the trinity, knowing Gods three persons reveal and encourage us to turn and face God, who through his love and grace provides us with the peace, love and hope we crave.

Please join me now if stirred to, as a church to resite the apostles creed, to not just remind us of the holy doctrine. But to enable us to affirm our belief to ourselves and unite as one body.

I believe in God, the Father almighty,

Creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ,

His only Son, our Lord,

Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit

And born of the virgin Mary.

He suffered under Pontius Pilate,

Was crucified, died, and was buried;

He descended to hell.

The third day he rose again from the dead.

He ascended to heaven

And is seated at the right hand

Of God the Father almighty.

From there he will come to judge

The living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

The holy catholic* church,

The communion of saints,

The forgiveness of sins,

The resurrection of the body,

And the life everlasting. Amen.

*catholic means universal or worldwide

Communion of saints” is that it refers to the whole community of faithful followers of Christ, living and dead, past, present and future

Lord God almighty, we thank you for your wonderous ways. We thank you for revealing to us yourself through the father, the son and the Holy Spirit.

We ask you lord to connect us with your love and help us to dance with you, allowing you to lead us in the beauty of your creation and in times where the beauty although always there, can be hard for you to see. We ask you lord to help us rejoice in your love and find the peace that your joy brings. guide us all lord in our own understanding of the Trinity and allow is to go for you, spreading your love, and wisdom according to your will.

Amen

Psalm 143:8,10 NIV

Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I entrust my life. [10] Teach me to do your will, for you are my God; may your good Spirit lead me on level ground.

Benediction

May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
